Six apprentices, two journeymen, and one Joint Apprentice Program (JAP) instructor joined other volunteers to help 30 Girl Scouts earn their Woodworking Merit Badges.

The event was an all-day workshop, co-sponsored by Missouri Women in the Trades (MoWiT) and the St. Louis & Kansas City JAP. The girls, in grades 6 through 8, worked hard throughout the day. They used hammers, drills, levels, and hand saws to build a plant stand or small seat. At the end of the day, the girls felt great pride in having used carpentry tools to produce their own wooden structure.

Beth Barton, president of MoWiT and SIB member said, “Our goal is to provide outreach efforts to the girls and show them they can master these skills and thrive in the construction industry if they want to.”
